Visit of Secretary(DARE), Govt. of India and Director General, ICAR to ICAR-NRC on Pig, Guwahati, Assam



Dr.T.Mohapatra, Secretary(DARE), Govt. of India and Director General, ICAR along with Shri.S.K.Singh, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor(DARE), visited ICAR-NRC on Pig, Guwahati, Assam Govt. of India on 14.05.2016. The Secretary interacted with Director and Scientists of ICAR-NRC on Pig, which was also attended by Directors of ICAR-NRC on Yak, ICAR-NRC on Mithun and Scientist Incharge, NE centre of CPCRI. The meeting started with a brief presentation by Dr.Dilip Sarma, Director, ICAR-NRC on Pig on major achievements of the institute. The DG, ICAR appreciated the infrastructural development of NRC on Pig within a short span of time. He enquired about status of piggery, present constraints, future needs and encouraged to develop a bigger picture on pig farming in the country and role of institute in the development. He also emphasised upon the importance of entrepreneurship development for meeting increased availability of pigs. DG asked the scientists to look beyond artificial insemination to make available quality germplasm at farmers field. During interaction, the issue of transmission of animal diseases across international borders, heat tolerance in animals, utilisation of agri-waste for animal feed, enrichment of agri-wastes and availability of swine fever vaccine was discussed. The DG asked the Director, ICAR-NRC on Pig to write to him on major issues of cross-border control of animal diseases and issues related to land allotment to NRC on Pig for expansion of activities. Regarding import of animals, DG intimated that there is a SAARC agreement, based on which superior germplasm form other SAARC countries could be requested for use in India. During the interaction, the DG encouraged scientists to work for the development of piggery, adopt villages and strengthen mera gaon, mera gaurav programme of the Government and increase visibility of the institute. Shri.S.K.Singh, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor(DARE) while, appreciating the fund utilisation and revenue generation by the institute, emphasized on spreading of expenditure across the financial year.
