Model Training Course on Integrated Piggery

A Model Training Course (MTC) on, 'Integrated Pig Farming for Sustainability and Socio-economic Upliftment of Tribal Population in North-Eastern Region' sponsored by Directorate of Extension, Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India was held for eight days from 5th to 12th January, 2016 at ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig (ICAR-NRCP), Rani, Guwahati. Emphasis of the training was on demand driven capacity building of extension managers and extension functionaries of the State development departments. Dr. N.C. Talukdar, Director, Institute for Advanced Studies in Science & Technology, Guwahati was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural function held on 5th January 2016. Chief Guest emphasized the need to understand the science behind the integration activities to make it more sustainable. Dr. D. K. Sarma, Director, ICAR-NRC on Pig highlighted different activities of the Centre with special reference to aim of the training program. He also gave overview of piggery sector in NER. A training manual for the benefit of participants was released during the Inaugural session. Twenty six Veterinarians working in different states of India viz., Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Bihar, Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam participated in the eight days training program. Main emphasis of the training was on integrating piggery with agriculture and allied activities for lowering input cost and to utilize complementary benefits of different activities. Participants were given hands on training on different Integrated piggery options like pig cum fish farming, pig cum agriculture, pig cum pork processing, pig cum snail farming, pig cum pearl farming etc.

Valedictory Ceremony was held on 12th January 2016. Dr. A. K. Sahoo, Retd. Principal Scientist & Head, Central Institute of Fresh Water Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar was the Chief Guest. Dr. D. K. Sarma, Director, ICAR-NRC on Pig presided over the Ceremony. Chief Guest in his address emphasized the need to promote integration of different farming and agricultural activities in view of increasing input costs. Coordinators of the training program Dr. Keshab Barman, Senior Scientist, Dr. Girish Patil, S., Senior Scientist & Dr. Rajendran Thomas, Scientist were present during the occasion.
